| Vet to Offer Free Health Care to Pets of the Homeless |
| A veterinarian, Kevin Stoothoff, is planning on using a grant he received from Feeding Pets of the Homeless, to help homeless animals. Awww! Actually, the vet wants to use the money he’s won to help the animals of homeless people. Often, these folks are in a difficult position, because they care for and love their animals, but many homeless shelters have stringent no pet policies. So, the owners and their pets choose to stay on the streets rather than staying warm, getting food and other services. The grant which is about $600 will go toward providing food for the animals and basic health care. Kevin stated, ‘We are going to start this month providing food as well as basic veterinary care…The dilemma with a lot of these homeless people — a concern they have — they feel if they try to approach anybody for help with pets, they feel their pets would be taken away from them for neglect.’ The vet plans to visit an Interfaith Soup Kitchen in Nevada twice a month on Wednesdays at 1:30 pm. The owners will be able to go inside and get a warm meal and the pets will be fed too. Then, the vet will check over their pets outside the soup kitchen. He will provide rabies vaccines and testing for heart worm, ear infections, fleas and ticks and provide other health care for the pets. Kevin Stoothoff stated that they really have no idea how many homeless people have pets, because a program of this nature has never really been done before. Steve Hoesterey of Brothers Keeper, the charity that runs the soup kitchen has also stated, ‘We don't know because we have never tried this before…We do know near-homeless families and homeless people with pets have to choose to be homeless because, with a pet, they can't get a place to live…Our main goal is people…but if someone is giving us money for pets, why not use it.’ If you wish to make a donation call: Terry Stoothoff at 352-622-5253 Source: http://www.petsunlimited.com/local_pet_blogs.cfm/id/1495 |
