| Rats Chewing up British Rail Lines |
| Rats are proving to be mightier than the British Railway System and there appears to be little that can be done to stop them. In the UK rats and mice are chewing holes through the some 20,000 miles of power and IT lines that run along rail lines. Thus, leading to the destruction of property, stopping of trains and all kinds of delays. They are organized and taking out the transportation lines first! Next thing you know rats the size of dogs will be coming up out of the sewers in New York to take back the streets. These small holes are causing some big problems too. Just last month a tiny hole chewed through the one inch high voltage power cable caused the breakdown of the West Coast mainline in Cheshire, Britain, leading to 20 train cancellations and 99 delays. A lot of people didn’t get home from work that day. According to a Network Rail spokesman, "This is a serious problem and it does happen throughout the county…We've got 20,000 miles of railway, all of which has got various types of cable whether it be signalling cable, telecommunications cable, or power supply cable running alongside the line…It’s going to cost us millions. But if you take into consideration the problems that instances like this cause – we effectively pay compensation to any delays that are caused to trains operators – having to spend money on replacement cables is going to save us money.” So now the country must spend millions of dollars, er...pounds, to fix the problem and prevent rats from getting too and chewing on the lines. My question is, why didn’t they cover the lines with something protective when they laid them in the first place?
