| Kosher Dog Food for the Jewish Dog |
| Well, I’ll be silly. Manufacturers are making all kinds of changes to pet food these days, from healthier food that humans would find appealing to kosher doggy foods. Yep, there is now kosher dog food for the Jewish dog. While this may seem a little inane at first, it’s actually filling an essential niche market. Many Jewish families struggle during the holidays to observe kosher rules regarding food. Beyond just making sure they don’t eat impure foods like pork, they also don’t mix milk with meat or eat certain grains during the holidays. Some families keep kosher all year long, making it very difficult to keep a pet and feed it using regular dog or cat food. These Kosher rules not only keep the human members of the family from eating forbidden foods, they also restrict Jewish families from bringing those foods into the house or gaining pleasure from coming in contact with the forbidden foods. For many pet owners, pleasure can be gained from simply feeding their cats or dogs. So, kosher rules do hinder the family that’s trying to follow a strict diet during the year or just for the holidays. Now there’s an alternative that means pet owners won’t have to feed their dogs and cats outside the home in order to stay kosher. The owner, Holly Cher, of Evangers Dog and Cat Food Co. which is based in wheeling has recently begun producing kosher pet food. She’s stated that, ‘We started seeking out what we could do about it…Just this year and last year we were able to use food approved for Passover.’ Cher learned about the problems for Jewish families during the holidays like Passover, while she was speaking with a Jewish neighbour who told her she’d been forced to keep her dog in the garage for Passover while feeding him. It was quite easy for Cher to make the switch to kosher foods since she already didn’t put any milk or grains in her canned food. From there all that was needed was a call to the Chicago Rabbinical Council for help in making the transition.
