| It's the fourth of July so I thought I'd write a bit more about our nation's icon, the Bald Eagle. These birds were endangered at one point and are now making an excellent comback. In fact, they're coming back so strong that there a more than a few myths going around about the appetites of these birds. Plenty of people claim that they've lost pets to Bald Eagles. Certainly these are big birds. One of these eagles weighs in at between 8 and 10 pounds and can have a wing span of three or four feet. However, that only puts their lifting power at 4 or 5 pounds. You wouldn't lose a large cat or dog or even your child to one of these majestic birds, so please don't worry. But what about your smaller pets? Biologist Ron Clarke gives his opinion, 'On a wide-open beach, I have no doubt that an eagle with a full head of steam could pick up a 6- or 8-pound dog and just keep on going,...If it landed to kill a 10-pounder, and then tried to pick up and fly from a dead stop, could it get off the ground? Probably not.' It's true that there have been stories over the years of Bald Eagles picking up pets and even children, but given the bird's size and the effort it takes for lift off this doesn't seem likely. Besides Eagles usually prefer fish for their meals anyway. David Hunsaker lives nears a Bald Eagle nest and have watched the parents bring plenty of food back over the years. 'The majority are herring or smelt, small fish about 8 inches long...They'll bring half a salmon, usually a pink, then take off and come back with what appears to be the other half. So they dismember it somewhere. I've never seen them bring a full coho or sockeye, but pieces.' In addition to the weight problems, Eagles are just plain wary of people.
