| Eight Exotic Pets Vets are Warning Against |
| A few days ago I wrote about a recent warning by veterinarians alerting parents to the dangers of letting kids keep exotic pets because they could transmit harmful bacteria and diseases. The American Academy of Pediatrics also released information on eight pets that aren't so good for children: 1. Reptiles: they aren't good for kids because they can carry Salmonella. You can't get small turtles at pet shops anymore for this particular reason. If your kids do have reptiles make sure you have them wash their hands after handling the animals or any of their food or equipment for the cages. 2. Hamsters: It seems a little surprising that these cute little guys are on the list. However, Hamsters are actually harbourers of salmonella and have even bee associated with outbreaks of Lymphocytic choriomeningitis. 3. Hedgehogs: Your kids may find these spiny little guys adorable, but they actually spread salmonella, yersina pseudotuerculosis and even rabies. Yikes! 4. Monkeys: This really is just not a good idea in most city and suburban households. Small monkeys like Macaques are similar enough to people that they can spread things like Herpes B virus and even tuberculosis. 5. Baby Chickens: Sure they're cute and oh so fuzzy. However, these little chicks can also carry salmonella. They also live a lot longer than you'd think, up to twenty years. 6. Ferrets: These small animals are extremely rambunctious, but not entirely tame. It's been known for Ferrets to attack small children when asleep or just lying down. 8. Prairie Dogs: Surprisingly some people actually keep these guys as pets. They have been known to cause outbreaks of tularemia which is a flu like illness that can be fatal. There are plenty of other animals in the exotic category to be prudent about when looking for a good pet for the kids.
