Critter Camp receives no public or government funding- We rely on the kindness of fellow animal lovers to feed and care for all 236 rescued critters here! No donation is too small (or large :) At a certain point re-homing pets, particularly the unusual and exotic ones, at all costs often serves only to make the people involved feel better about themselves, irregardless of the stability and continuity of care the elderly, abused or ill animal actually needs. Euthanizing such animals brings the rescuer down to the universally despised level of "puppy-mills" in that if an animal is no longer useful to humans it must be killed. This is incredibly heartbreaking. Again, people bred every one of these pet animals for human enjoyment and/or profit, therefore we as humans have an obligation to provide the best of care for these animals for their entire lives, whether or not they are "pet quality." Videos & Photos Be sure to see our videos on YouTube and our photos on Flickr And Graspr too! Ask Critter Camp!! My kids want a lizard for a pet, but we don't know what kind to get. They want something "cool" like an iguana, but I have heard they are difficult to care for. What do you suggest? T.S. in IllinoisCritter Camp Answers:Good question T.S. ! Thanks for researching your new pet before you acquire it!After caring for many different types of lizards we agree that iguanas are difficult to care for. They often bond with one person, becoming jealous of that person's mate, even attacking! They also grow to be 5-6 feet in length and really need a full room to be housed appropriately. Their bite can be very nasty and they whip with their tails when they are upset. They also live up to 15 years- a very long term committment. We suggest that you consider getting a bearded dragon for a lizard pet because they are very gentle, sturdy, fairly easy to care for and they truly enjoy being handled. We always recommend that people visit someone who has the type of pet they are considering before they get it so they know what to expect. Please see our Bearded Dragon Care Page on our website for more in-depth information on caring for "beardies."
