|
January 4, 2008 - PetSmart has now suspended the sale of birds in 46 states due to an outbreak of a bird disease that can be transmitted to humans.
In total, 775 stores have stopped selling birds due to the outbreak of psittacosis, a bacterial disease found in birds that can be spread to humans. Bruce Richardson, a spokesman for PetSmart states that stores in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico or Colorado have not been effected by the recall of birds. He also said that birds that are in the stores are being treated with antibiotics, and those people who purchased birds have received letters warning them of the situation. According to officials with the U.S. Center for Disease Control, psittacosis is a disease that can be spread to humans who inhale dried secretions. Human symptoms include fever, headaches and a dry cough. "Some of the birds can die if they are real young and get it but some of the birds can get over and just carry the disease," Dr. Rob Hess of Winter Park Veterinary Clinic said. |
